Shelterbox
January 20, 2020 - Sheree Sheets, Ambassador for Shelterbox gave us an overview of their programs around the world.
Sheree told us that Shelterbox started about 20 years ago and they are now worldwide. Their mission is to deliver the essential aid people need to begin rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of a disaster. The aid they supply comes in the form of ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits. Their sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents specially designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter until they are able to start the process of rebuilding a home. Their  ShelterKits contain all of the essential tools people need to start repairing and rebuilding homes straight away. They usually don't go into a country where the RedCross has a strong presence and they tend to work in rural areas rather than cities.  They have strong links with Rotary.
The following comes from their website -
Rotarians and Rotary groups across the world support us in a variety of ways, from raising funds to providing support on the ground during our response to a disaster. This enables us to cross boundaries and cut through red tape to reach even the most remote communities.

This partnership has helped us to become who we are today. Our global network of ShelterBox affiliates, which provides all round assistance, evolved from Rotary relationships.

AWIM - A World in Motion 2020
January 16, 2020 - The first session of the 8 week AWIM project began today. You can watch weekly activities HERE
There are 24 students in the class at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School. The science teacher, Brandon Gritz is leading this project for the 6th time. The Kyrene Rotary Club has 9 volunteers that work with 8 teams of 3 over the entire project. Dave Kline, Doug Bock, Andy Wangstad, Bill Perkins and Ken Pollock are club members. Dave DePrator, Jim Durham, Lourdes Kline, and Skip Pollock are friends of Rotary who round out the volunteer group. We are looking forward to another fun-filled and rewarding project. (The volunteers usually have brunch together after the session) You can watch weekly activities HERE
Here are a couple of pictures of Andy and Doug with their teams.

Build for Habitat
January 11, 2020 - Exchange student Remy joined several members of our club to help build a house for Habitat.  The Kyrene Rotary Club has been volunteering with Habitat for 15 years.
And here are some more photos showing most of the volunteers, the Rotarian volunteer group, and my "portrait" with the exchange students. The Rotarian volunteer group picture includes the 3 exchange students, 2 of the family who will own the house, and Jason Barlow, CEO of Habitat for Humanity - Central Arizona.  Rotary District Governor David Simmer came by and spent more than an hour with us midday, a pleasant surprise!

Thanks to all the members who came.  We got a lot of work done in prep for the pre-drywall inspection.  Special shout out to Machel and Brent for arranging and transporting the exchange students.   I was pleased to be back on a H4H jobsite AND to last the day!  This was the 14th or 15th house we - Kyrene Rotary & friends - helped build and nearly the 20th time we did so.   FYI "our" houses through the year were mostly financed by the East Valley Lutheran HFH Coalition.
