June 15, 2015 - Rebecca Bond, AARP Experience Corps Program Coordinator, gave us a great description of the Experience Corps organization, its history, goals, and current programs. The basic idea is to match individuals over 55 years old with youngsters who need help with reading skills. The Corps has 2000 members in 22 cities across the nation.    Experience Corps has existed since 2006 and has served over 2000 students in grades 1 to 3 in Tempe Schools. They are grant funded and have 84 participants in Tempe but they are looking for new volunteers. Interested people should contact Rebecca at Rebecca_Bond@tempe.gov.  Check out the web site.
June 8, 2015 - Don Robbins, a member of the Sun Lakes RC and the Phoenix Area Coordinator for A World in Motion (AWIM), gave us a great overview of the AWIM program in Arizona. The program works with schools in the area to help build interest in science and engineering. Volunteers work with kids in their classrooms to design, build, and test their own versions of various devices.  It is a creative way to engage youngsters in problem-solving and critical thinking. The students work in teams, then compete against teams in their school. The winners can compete against other schools and then internationally. Club members were very impressed and will discuss how we might participate with AWIM in our local schools. Check out the web site by clicking here.

If you are a busy person who wants to have fun while making a difference, then be our guest for lunch on Monday (not holidays) from 12:10 to 1:15 pm at the Kobe Japanese Steakhouse.  We are men and women in ages from 30's to retired. Check our Facebook page - Kyrene Corridor RC as well. The URL for this page is KyreneRotary.org

May 22, 2015 - Four enthusiastic members of Kyrene Rotary Club as well as a family member sold snacks and cold drinks on Friday, May 22nd at Tempe's "Movie in the Park" series. The movie was "The Little Mermaid" and Andy gets the award for most creative appearance.  His glow stick glasses were a hit! A great night was had by all!
The movies, that will be shown the whole month of May, are free to the public and are meant for the entire family to enjoy. They are held on the north side of Kiwanis Park. For a complete listing of the movie, visit: Movies in the Park
