Build for Habitat
January 11, 2020 - Exchange student Remy joined several members of our club to help build a house for Habitat.  The Kyrene Rotary Club has been volunteering with Habitat for 15 years.
And here are some more photos showing most of the volunteers, the Rotarian volunteer group, and my "portrait" with the exchange students. The Rotarian volunteer group picture includes the 3 exchange students, 2 of the family who will own the house, and Jason Barlow, CEO of Habitat for Humanity - Central Arizona.  Rotary District Governor David Simmer came by and spent more than an hour with us midday, a pleasant surprise!

Thanks to all the members who came.  We got a lot of work done in prep for the pre-drywall inspection.  Special shout out to Machel and Brent for arranging and transporting the exchange students.   I was pleased to be back on a H4H jobsite AND to last the day!  This was the 14th or 15th house we - Kyrene Rotary & friends - helped build and nearly the 20th time we did so.   FYI "our" houses through the year were mostly financed by the East Valley Lutheran HFH Coalition.

Exchange Student Remy - presentation

January 6, 2020 - Remy, our exchange student from France, told us about his home and country.
Remy told us he lives in a house that was built about 1830 with his parents and 2 younger brothers . His home town is Le Thor which is about 15 miles from Avignon. He said that he lived about 5 miles from his high school of 12,000 students. His school starts the day at 8 or 9 and ends at 4 or 5 with a two hour lunch. He showed us pictures of his village, nearby famous buildings, and the terrain.
Remy wants to study political science with a goal of being a diplomat  in the future.  His presentation was well organized and his English skills are excellent. Club members enjoyed learning more about this impressive young man.
In the first photo he is congratulated by President Wally. The next photo shows him  with his host mother who has a son, Tanner, who is currently an exchange student in Belgium. His host mother was also an exchange student several years ago.

Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport
December 30, 2019 - David Ramirez from the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport gave us an excellent overview of the history, current state, and plans for the airport.
Phoenix Sky Harbor is one of the busiest airports in the U.S. Last year there were 45 million passengers using the facility and there are about 140,000 flights per day with 20 airlines. Besides the Sky Harbor facility, the Phoenix airport manages facilities at Good Year and Deer Valley. Those airports provide specialty services not found at Sky Harbor. Local economists estimate that the Phoenix Airports generate over $38 Billion in economic activity.
Terminal 2 will be closed soon but additional gates will be added to Terminal 3 and 4. Terminal 3 is currently undergoing a 3 phase improvement process which includes a north concourse with 10 gates. Terminal 4 will add an 8th concourse with 8 gates that will be dedicated to Southwest Airlines.  Terminal 4 handles about 85% of all passenger traffic.  The Skytrain will also be expanded to other parking areas and a new hotel that will be constructed at 24th and Buckeye.  Tours are given twice a month.  Customer Service is a high priority and volunteer "Navigators" are available everywhere to assist passengers. Also there are Motorist Assist stations in the parking lots to enable people to get help with flat tires, dead batteries, or keys locked in cars at no cost to the passenger.  The continual improvements and focus on passenger experiences is very impressive and helps Phoenix Sky Harbor be labeled the "friendliest airport in the world.  David Ramirez did a great job and there was much discussion.

Blast from the Past - August 2006
District Governor Don Kelly and his wife and Assistant District Governor Tom Burns and his wife visited with our Board of Directors before the meeting.  At the regular meeting DG Don provided a model for increasing membership and encouraged members to both raise funds and use matching grants to accomplish projects.  Attendance was 75%.  Missing were Alan Beebe, Tom Hickey, George Kimbler and John Lamont.
DG Don, with sponsor Wally Stuebner’s help, inducted Mindy Grodzki as our newest member.  Mindy is Program Director for Aquatics, Teens, and Group Fitness at the Tempe YMCA.  She is married with two small children.  No stranger to Rotary, she was previously a member of the Chandler club for a year during 2002-03.  Her Rotary classification is Fitness & Aquatics.  Welcome Mindy!
PDG Barb explained the 4-step “Red Badge” new member program to us.  Mindy will graduate to the regular “Blue Badge” as soon as she has attended a Board meeting, attended a meeting of another club, participated in a club service project, and greeted arriving members and guests for __ weeks.
