Oct 9, 2015 - Movies in the Park was very successful last week and again last night. Over $300 net profit was made on both nights. Last night the crowd was not a big as anticipated but there was a steady business through out the night. A number of members participated, - Doug, Jim, Kelly and Tom but we also had help from Kelly's family (Lonnie and Kate) and Tom's daughter Angelina. It was great to have the children help and the extra hands were terrific. Two more weeks to go to meet our fund raising goals. Come out and have some fun with us.
Oct 5, 2015_ Today, Beth Brizel and Sandy Lowe spoke to us about the upcoming "override" election. They gave us a fact sheet which contained performance statistics that show just how well this district is doing compared to others and make a compelling argument for supporting the DAA override later this month. The fact sheet shows how the funds are distributed. They encouraged members to return the mail ballots as soon as they are received. There was a vigorous question and answer session - along with several supportive statements from club members that followed the presentations.
Sept 28, 2015 - We were honored by the visit of our District Governor, Sherry Maschel, who knighted our President, Dave Kline, and then the entire club. After reviewing our last year's performance, Sherry talked about the "Power of Rotary" and what it takes to bring young people into the organization. She suggested that we need to focus on young people by increasing our emphasis on programs such as "Early Rotarians", Interact, Rotaract, RYLA, and Rotary Youth Exchange. Sherry wants us to adopt the acronym RERF - which means Recruit - Engage - Retain - Fun. Paying attention to REFR should help us "Growing our Club".
We all enjoyed Sherry's visit and had a great time together.

Sept 30, 2015 - Today, club members Harry, Ken, Machel, Doug, and Dave spent a few hours transferring food from boxes to shelves and then packing food bags at the Kyrene Resource Center. These food bags will be available to needy families in the area beginning on Thursday morning. Our club is hoping to increase our participation with this very worthwhile charitable organization. After words we all enjoyed fellowship at lunch.
Sept 21, 2015 - Denise Rentschler, a Public Information Officer (PIO) with the city of Tempe gave us an enthusiastic description of the many events and programs supported by the city. Denise has been in this position for 8 years and feels that Tempe has weathered the worst of the economic slump and is now moving forward on many fronts. She said that the city is now averaging about 2 events per week end, and conducts around 900 programs every quarter that cover a wide range of interests, geared mainly towards families. For example, there is the Halloween Carnival, Movies in the Park, Playday, Kids Swim Free, Arts in Kiwanis park every Friday, events on Town Lake, and a host of others. Denise believes that Tempe is now entering a very creative, forward looking phase in their parks that will benefit the entire community. Check out their new brochure.
