February 23, 2017 - Today, club members Bill, Harry, Mike, Andy, Doug, and Dave spent a few hours at the Kyrene Resource Center transferring food from boxes to shelves and then packing food bags. These food bags will be available to needy families in the area. Our club is hoping to increase our participation with this very worthwhile charitable organization. We had an enjoyable time together while working and at lunch afterwards.
Feb 20, 2017 - Club member David Archibald, an accomplished speaker and former track coach, gave us a very interesting tour of Arizona: a variety of geographies and histories. We saw photos of the Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, and Havasupai Canyon which includes three different water falls. We learned about towns such as Sedona, Jerome, Phoenix, and Bisbee as well as the colorful figures associated with their histories. David also described some interesting Indian folk lore. David had many more stories and photos available but there was not sufficient time in the meeting. Perhaps one day David will speak again about the history and geography of Arizona.
Feb 20, 2017 - Harry, one of the club's founding members, received a recognition award from the United Food Bank. Harry received the award on behalf of all the East Valley Rotary clubs who have participated in packing food once every quarter. Harry is the initiator and driver for this very successful multi-club project which provides significant support for the United Food Bank and the citizens of eastern Arizona.
Feb 13, 2017 - Rose Ann Canizales, President of the Association for Construction Career Development (ACCD), told us about the organization. It has existed for 15 years and is modeled after a similar organization in Texas. ACCD's goal is to facilitate employment between career seekers and industry leaders. Each year they hold a 2 day event for students to see real world applications in the construction industry. The construction industry is short of manpower and would like to encourage students to enter this field: it is exciting, rewarding, and well paid. ACCD has a superb web site and a very informative guide. This year's Construction Career Days event will be held at the Arizona Army National Guard Papago Site on November 2nd and 3rd. They are looking for volunteers to help plan and staff the event site.
February 6, 2017 - President Doug inducted two new members into the club today; Dave Archibald, sponsored by Harry and Mike Pheilsticker, sponsored by Dave. We look forward to their contributions to all our activities.
Today we also exchanged club banners with the Rotary Club Tirana in Albania. President Doug and Vladimir Pulaj are pictured here with the banners.
