June 5, 2017 - Doreen Pollack, Master Gardener, explained what "Master Gardener" meant and then gave us valuable information about plants and vegetation in Maricopa County.  A good reference to use is the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association. She explained that the 3 major elements to consider are soil, watering, and timing. Because the soil in this area is mostly clay it is important to modify the soil by adding "ammendments" which are basically organic matter.
For potted plants and raised beds care must be taken to eliminate or reduce salt build up. Watering should be long enough to encourage root growth: 2 feet depth for shrubs and 3 feet for trees. Doreen also gave us general guidelines for when to plant various species.  She suggested looking on Facebook to get answers from various gardening groups.
